Thong

A thong is the general term describing sexy underwear that does not cover the butt. Depending on just how skimpy the underwear is, it can range from a relatively wide back strap (as in the image above), to just a string like the G-String, V-String, or T-String. In the skimpest case, you even have a C-String!.

When people talk about thongs, they generally refer to the G-String or the relatively wide one pictured above.
